Differences between Engineering and Engineering Technology

Engineering is a discipline which involves the conversion of natural resources for the betterment of humankind. Engineering is a field which requires perquisites on various subjects. These include fluid mechanics, physics, materials science and system analysis. These subjects provide essential knowledge which helps in conversion of natural resources for the usefulness of humankind. The natural resources used in engineering include energy and materials. The properties of materials define their application. The properties of materials include chemical properties, mechanical properties and electrical properties. There are various sources of energy. These include nuclear energy, fossil fuels, sunlight, hydro electric power and wind energy. The energy sources can either be renewable or non renewable.

Engineering involves designing and implementation of devices, structures, processes, materials and system. Engineering applies mathematical, technical and scientific knowledge in the process of designing and implementing structures for the betterment of human kind. Engineering mostly involves constructive use of scientific principles in providing solutions to certain problems in the society. Structures are designed for specific application. There are various factors which are considered in the design work. This include safety and operating conditions. Engineers make use of scientific principles to design and implement various engineering components and materials.

On the other hand engineering technology involves the integration of natural science and mathematics in implementing engineering structures based on existing technology. Engineering technology involves improvement of existing products. This is done in order to facilitate some benefit to humankind. Engineering technology involves the use of engineering principles in solving society problems. Engineering technology is concerned with identifying real problems in the world and finding means of solving them

There are some differences between engineering and engineering technology. These two disciplines vary according to their application. Engineering is concerned with much mathematical knowledge compared to engineering technology. Engineering technology is more involved in scientific principles in dealing with real world problems. Engineering technology makes use of basic scientific and mathematic principles in identifying solutions to certain problems. Engineering applies rigorous mathematical skills in problem solution. It is mandate that students who want to venture in engineering to be introduced to rigorous mathematical skills as opposed to engineering technology. Engineering and engineering technology require different subjects as prerequisite. Engineering requires knowledge of chemistry and physics while engineering technology programs does not necessary require the knowledge of physics and chemistry.  Engineering technology programs produce professionals who are more practical as opposed to engineering programs.

Engineering disciple is an innovative oriented field while engineering technology is more concerned with implementation of existing technology. Engineering principles are based on theories while engineering technology is based on the methods involved towards problem solution. Engineering involves development of a non existing process. Engineering process can be described as the manner in which operating conditions are achieved. The new processes developed in engineering are normally applied in engineering technology to provide solutions to certain problems.

Engineering and engineering technology work together in providing solutions to problem for the benefit of humankind. The processes developed in engineering are implemented in engineering technology. Innovations and inventions are achieved in engineering. Engineering technology applies engineering principles in bringing forth solutions. It is therefore clear that these two disciplines work together for the benefit of human kind.

In conclusion, engineering involves the use of rigorous mathematical skills in solving problems. Engineering technology uses engineering principles in problem solution. There are various differences between engineering and engineering technology
